Today, our 18 hole course is known as ‘Ellesmere Port Golf Course’ which is steeped in history dating back to 1913 when the first golf club called Hooton Park Golf Club was founded in 1913 as a 9 hole course.

The Club’s first Professional was William (Bill) Henry Davies from 1913 to 1916. William finished in the top 10 in The Open Championship four times and played in the 1931 and 1933 Ryder Cups.

In the 1920’s, the course was extended to 18 holes and re-named Hooton Golf Club.

In 1932, Richard (Dick) Burton was appointed the Professional at Hooton Golf Club who is best remembered for winning The Open Championship (British Open) in 1939, when it was played on the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. He held The Open Championship title from 1939 until 1945 as no Open Championships were played from 1940 to 1945 (inclusive) because of World War II ! Richard also played for Great Britain in the Ryder Cup in 1935, 1937 and 1949.

We know that “Hooton Ladies Golf Club” existed in 1936 as evidence exists of the results of a ladies’ match played against Port Sunlight where ‘we’ were truly white-washed!

The course was requisitioned for the Second World War effort in 1940 which inevitably led to its’ closure.

On 12th August 1991, several ladies established “Hooton Ladies Golf Club” in response to not being allowed to join Ellesmere Port Golf Club which was open to Men Members only.

Hooton Ladies Golf Club celebrates its’ 33rd anniversary in August 2024.
